Talk Talk with Joanne Liu

Talk Talk is a regular feature where our artists introduce themselves and share some of the experiences that have shaped their work. This edition features Joanne Liu from Hong Kong. Joanne’s book My Museum is available through our online store, as are a range of tote bags created through her studio All Things Bright & Beautiful. We also stock a range of children’s mini-books by Joanne, which are available in-store online.


Joanne Liu and Ah Li of All Things Bright & Beautiful

Based in Hong Kong, Joanne Liu founded the studio All Things Bright & Beautiful in 2001 with partner Ah Li. Together they illustrate books, cards and postcards, as well as other stationery products. Along the way they have also held art exhibitions and workshops. All Things Bright & Beautiful operate on the belief that “the world is an amazing place, full of bright and beautiful things” and “sometimes we just need to make an effort to look around and discover the beauty around us”.

Talk Talk with Joshua Santospirito

Talk Talk is a regular feature where our artists introduce themselves and share some of the experiences that have shaped their work. This edition features Joshua Santospirito from Hobart whose comics The Long Weekend in Alice Springs and Swallows is now available at The All Story.


Joshua Santospirito

Joshua Santospirito is a graphic novelist, an artist, a musician and a writer who lives in Hobart, Tasmania. He enjoys sitting on his couch and avoiding making art, music or writing. His comics and art have been published in The Monthly, Meanjin and Island. His first graphic novel, The Long Weekend in Alice Springs was awarded the Chief Minister’s Northern Territory Read Non Fiction Book Award, the ComicOz Award and was shortlisted for the Ledger Awards. It was described by Neil Gaiman “The best thing I’ve been handed to read in ages”.

Eloise Grills by Leah Jing

Eloise Grills is an award-winning essayist, comics artist, and poet. She works from a studio in North Melbourne, as part of the Meat Market’s studio program. In addition to her recent comic publication with Glom Press, her debut poetry collection, If you’re sexy and you know it slap your hams is out now through Subbed In. Her first full-length illustrated essay collection, Big Beautiful Female Theory, is slated for publication in 2020.

Talk Talk is a regular feature where our artists introduce themselves and share some of the experiences that have shaped their work. This edition features Kim Lam aka Dangerlam from Melbourne, whose comics Life Happening and Small Pleasures are available now in our store.


Kim Lam by Klarissa Pfisterer

Kim is an illustrator and self-proclaimed spy living in Melbourne with hypergraphia. She enjoys wresting secrets from the universe through the reading of books and people, and manifesting some of this in her drawings. On the side, Kim collaborates with Dr Jason Fox & The Cleverness. Their favourite project to date is publishing the independent magazine The Cleverness Biannual. Occasionally she saves furry little lives by moonlighting as a veterinarian.

Joel VDK

Joel VDK is a comics artist and commercial illustrator, working with a wide variety of clients from around the world. His ongoing series Roam is now into its fourth edition, with all editions available through The All Story. His forthcoming title Fortress—said to be a tale of marauding robots in the post-apocalyptic Australian outback—is due for release in September.

Carolyn Hawkins

Carolyn Hawkins is an artist and illustrator living in Melbourne, whose practice involves the use of pens, paper, pixels, ink, gouache, clay, words, and sounds. Much of her work is about houses and the things that live inside them. When not working on zines and design projects, Carolyn plays in the bands School Damage and Parsnip.

Michael Fikaris by Dave Carswell

Michael Fikaris is an Australian multidisciplinary artist whose career has spanned nearly 20 years. Initially a central figure in both Melbourne’s comic book and street art movements in the early 2000’s, Fikaris has expanded their oeuvre into print making, small press publishing and large-scale painting. His comic Instruction Manual for Lonely Mountains is now available in our store.
